The tourist area of the region of Kroměříž stretches along the border between the Zlín Region and the Olomouc Region and is another natural connection of Moravian Slovakia, the Zlín Region, Wallachia and the fertile flats of Haná. The city of bishops and archbishops, Kroměříž, is the ancient centre of this area. You will find ineffaceable traces of building development activities of several generations of top Roman Catholic officers all around the place. No matter from which direction you approach the city, the roads and streets will always take you to one of the city's marvellous squares - Sněmovní, Masarykovo, Stojanovo, Hanácké or Riegrovo - which will always send you to the city's most beautiful square, Velké náměstí. It is truly large, surrounded by splendid citizens’ houses with archways that are laced by dozens of small shops, cafes, galleries, comfortable restaurants and cosy pubs.
Put up at one of them and take your time while eating a delicious lunch and thinking whether you should first visit the Archbishop's Château with its painting gallery, library and splendid Council Hall, mint, or whether you would rather succumb to the lure of the gardens of the château - Květná and Podzámecká. Whichever you choose first, you will always receive a pleasant surprise. There are many reasons why the entire château area has been an object of National Cultural Heritage of the Czech Republic. And you haven’t visited the renowned Archbishop wine cellars. Their underground vaults hold memories of many centuries. They were established as early as 1266 and many wines that pleased the archbishops, among others have matured there ever since that time. This tradition has been preserved until now, when the best wines are still matured in historic barrels. The biggest of them contains up to nineteen thousand litres. It is the third biggest wine barrel in Moravia. The guided tour of the Archbishop wine cellars lasts approximately 30 minutes, but you can prolong your stay under the ground if you also order a tasting of sacramental wines.
After you come out of the dimly lit wine cellars, as the manifold fragrances and tastes are fading gently on your palate and tongue, we recommend that you go for a stroll round the Květná and Podzámecká gardens. There you can admire the subtle designs of the gardeners, whose imagination and experience have resulted in the gardens appearing on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
All of Kroměříž is a crossroads of art and culture. Its agnomen of the "Athens of Haná” is really justified. You are invited to try the three marked tours of the city, presenting the following topics: "People and Nature", "Memorial to Max Švabinský" or the "Small Gallery". You don’ have to look for a guide. The tours are clearly marked so that you don’t lose your way. And even if you do get lost, you won’t be sorry. Each street conceals countless attractions and marvellous corners that will enchant you. In summer you can visit several musical festivals in Kroměříž. Do you like the brisk pace of military marches? Then you shouldn’t miss the International Festival of Military Bands. If you prefer classical music, the festival Music in the Gardens is the right choice for you. Are you interested in music with the scent of incense? Then you shouldn’t hesitate to reserve tickets to the International Festival of Contemporary Arts focusing on spiritual art - Forfest.
If you wish to leave the haste and stress of your busy lives behind you, you might like to visit the Bajda sports grounds featuring a swimming pool and beach volleyball courts or fly on the wings of a small plane up to the clouds and watch the human bustle on the ground from a god's perspective.
Outside the city walls there are further possibilities to spend a pleasant time or an entire holiday. Walks along nature trails on the banks of the Morava river or around Chropyně, among fishponds, on meadows and in woods are a true balm for the tired souls of modern humans.
The Kroměříž region also offers folklore traditions and ornamental folk costumes. Chropyně houses the wonderful annual Haná Festival. You can admire the colourful parade in folk costumes as well as plenty of delicious food there. Perhaps you will also recall the legend of Ječmínek, the King of Haná, which is presented in Ječmínek Hall in the Chropyně Château. By the way, the castle also boasts a unique collection of historical weapons from the 17th century and an exposition of paintings by Emil Filla.
The folk costumes, traditions and hospitality of the people living in eastern Haná merges into the also interesting habits, songs and magic of the western stretch of Wallachia. The slow and broad dialect of Haná is replaced by the typical speech of the Wallachians. They will be waiting for you in the foothills of Hostýnské vrchy at the "Walachian Ball” or “Kácání mája” and many more attractive events. Like in Holešov.
You’ve never been to Holešov, Rymice or Velké Těšany? You had better make up for it as soon as possible. The folk architecture open-air museum in Rymice and the two-floor windmill in Velké Těšany represent the original style of living, working and spending holidays as well as ordinary weekdays of the inhabitants of South-eastern Haná.
The tourist area of Kroměříž includes Chřiby and Hostýnské vrchy. You will find a recently completed stone observation tower on top of Brdo, the highest peak of Chřiby. The view offered by this tower may help you plan the directions you are going to take next. You are free to ride your bike, stroll along wood trails from spring through autumn; in winter you can put on skis and do some cross-country skiing. The views of the landscape, surprising scenery or interesting natural formations are deeply impressive. “Kazatelna” for instance, a perfectly formed boulder with stairs hewn in the living rock up to the summit. The path leading to it is not strenuous and anyone can make it. And everyone will be rewarded by a wonderful view of the wooded slopes around. If you haven’t forgotten to take a good trekking map with you, you will certainly find the ruin of the medieval castle of Cimburk, where several concerts and even theatrical performances with exceptional stage management take place every year.
The larger and higher Hostýnské vrchy are even richer. You will find a nice observation tower and a nearby famous sacred place, Svatý Hostýn on the summit of the hill that bears the same name as the mountains.
Hostýnské vrchy are crossed by numerous marked trekking paths, cycling paths and cross-country skiing tracks in winter. The wooded range of hills conceals many surprises. For instance, the western centre in Jankovice. If you want to see how it feels to be a real cowboy, all you have to do is jump in a true western saddle and set off for a half-day trip. After you return, you shouldn’t miss the saloon where you can have Mexican beans and a few tumblers of whiskey and end up dancing to country music. Then you will be ready to appreciate the performance of the nearly forty riders who will do a genuine Western rodeo show.
If the level of adrenaline isn’t high enough while horseback riding, you can test your condition and courage climbing the Skalný rocks. There are several rock faces bearing well-chosen names: Eagle, Tooth and Frog. You can climb these rocks under the supervision of experienced climbers who will safeguard you and will give you a hand if necessary.
